Old vs New in Stratford: Is This Hidden Mall Worth Your Time?

Whenever I’m in London, one place I always find myself going back to is the famous Westfield Stratford City. It’s modern, massive, and honestly—perfect for just chilling, shopping, and spending a full day indoors. But in this visit, I decided to switch things up a little.

Just a few stops away from where I was staying, I revisited another shopping spot in Stratford—one that feels like a completely different world compared to Westfield.

A Look Into Stratford Centre

Stratford Centre is an older shopping mall and indoor market located right in the heart of Stratford town centre in East London. Compared to the sleek and polished vibe of Westfield, this place carries a more traditional, local feel.

Inside, you’ll find over 60 stores offering everything from fashion and daily essentials to quick bites and snacks. It’s not as glamorous, but that’s kind of the charm. The mall caters more towards the local community, with products that are generally more affordable and practical—think mid to lower price range instead of luxury or premium brands.

It’s the kind of place where you’ll see everyday London life happening.

What Makes It Different from Westfield?

If Westfield Stratford City is all about modern retail, big brands, and a premium shopping experience, Stratford Centre is the complete opposite.

  • Westfield: Clean, upscale, international brands, lifestyle experience
  • Stratford Centre: Older setup, local shops, budget-friendly options

So depending on what you’re looking for, both malls actually serve very different purposes.

A Word of Caution: Scammers Around

Now, here’s something important I experienced and noticed during my visit.

Stratford Centre has a reputation for being a hotspot for scammers—especially around the exterior areas of the mall. You might encounter people approaching you with deals that sound too good to be true.

One common trick involves offering gadgets or items at a much cheaper price than what’s inside the mall. They’ll then try to lead you outside to complete the deal. What happens next? Victims end up paying, only to receive a bag filled with random items like snacks or drinks instead of the actual product.

So if you’re visiting:

  • Avoid deals from strangers
  • Don’t follow anyone outside for “special offers”
  • Stick to official shops inside the mall

Just staying alert will help you avoid unnecessary trouble.

Is It Worth Visiting?

Stratford Centre might not impress you the same way Westfield does, but it offers a very different perspective of London shopping culture.

If you’re curious about:

  • Local lifestyle
  • Budget shopping options
  • A more raw and unfiltered side of the city

Then it’s definitely worth a quick visit.

Otherwise, if you’re just looking for a comfortable, safe, and premium shopping experience, Westfield Stratford City is still the better choice.

Final Thoughts

This visit really showed me how two shopping centres in the same area can feel completely different. One is polished and global, the other is local and grounded.

If you’re exploring Stratford, why not check out both and decide for yourself?

And if you want to see the full experience, including what’s inside and around the mall, check out my video above—it’ll give you a clearer idea of what to expect before you decide where to spend your time.
