Hi everyone! Today, I want to share one of the innovative ways people in the Netherlands recycle their plastics and earn rewards. So, without further ado, let’s dive in!
The Netherlands is renowned for its strong commitment to environmental protection. The country has set ambitious goals, such as eliminating fuel-powered cars and maximizing plastic recycling. To support these goals, the Dutch have implemented an engaging recycling program that rewards people for recycling plastic bottles through special machines.
These recycling machines, which you can find in supermarkets, gas stations, and train stations, offer 15 cents for every plastic bottle returned. The incentive encourages people to recycle and helps reduce plastic waste. The money earned can be used for shopping in supermarkets, gas stations, or special shops.
A Nostalgic Experience in Frankfurt
Eighteen years ago, during a visit to Frankfurt, I first encountered these recycling machines. On that trip, I introduced my mum to the concept. She had never tried using one before, so we took the opportunity to let her have her first experience with the machine. After depositing the bottles, we received a voucher which could be redeemed for cash at the shop counter or used as a shopping voucher. My mum chose to redeem the voucher for cash, and seeing her delight was priceless. It was her first time recycling and earning from it in Europe.

Exploring Amsterdam’s Recycling Efforts
The next day, as we wandered through the streets of Amsterdam, we came across another recycling machine in a supermarket. My mum, excited from her previous experience, decided to try it again. This time, however, we noticed that not all plastic bottles were accepted for recycling. Despite this minor hiccup, we managed to recycle some bottles and earn 25 cents.
My mum’s joy was evident as she received the voucher. Her expressions captured the excitement and satisfaction of participating in a simple yet impactful activity.

If you’re in Europe and want to contribute to environmental conservation, look around your area for these recycling machines. It’s a fun and rewarding way to make a difference. By recycling, you not only earn a small reward but also play a part in reducing plastic waste and protecting the planet.
That’s all for today’s sharing on my mum’s “recycle and earn” experience. I hope you enjoyed the story and found it inspiring.
