The New Galaxy A54 – Our First Impression

The Samsung Galaxy A series has been popular with customers, giving access to all those Samsung features, while avoiding the sort of prices that come with the flagship Galaxy S. Last week, Samsung has unveiled their latest iteration of the A series Galaxy smartphones, including the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G. The 2023 Samsung Galaxy A54 5G is closer to the top-tier Galaxy S23 models than we’ve previously seen.

We have manage to get hold of an unit of the Galaxy A54 a few days ago and here are our first impression about this phone.

The Design. The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G has had quite the upgrade in the design department compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy A53 5G, though you might not notice it by looking at it front-on. That’s because most of said change is happening on the rear of the phone. The most immediately noticeable is that Samsung has ditched the contour camera housing present on last year’s model, instead opting for the same minimalistic design as the flagship Galaxy S23 line.

The other big upgrade for the Galaxy A54 is the material used; rather than going for ‘glasstic’ (that’s plastic to you and I) Samsung has given the A54 the premium treatment with a full glass rear. It immediately makes the phone feel more premium. It also sports the more rounded corners of the Galaxy S23 range, which helps the phone stand out from a sea of similar-looking mid-range alternatives, and IP67 dust and water resistance should protect it from most accidents.

New design changes aside, it’s very much business as usual for the Galaxy A54, sporting a power button and volume controls on the right, a USB-C port on the bottom and a combined SIM and microSD card tray. The latter is a nice touch, allowing you to expand storage by up to 1TB if required.

The Display. The 6.4-inch AMOLED panel sports an ‘Infinity O’ design that, to you and I, simply means it has a single hole-punch camera cutout in the middle of the display. The combination of the FHD+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate is nice, though it remains unchanged compared to last year’s A53 and text can sometimes look a little soft if you’ve experienced anything higher, though most consumers likely won’t notice.

The display is dynamic, dropping between 60Hz and 120Hz depending on what you’re doing, though you can also force a 120Hz refresh rate at the expense of battery life.

The Camera. The Galaxy A54 is equips with a 50MP rear camera with f/1.8 aperture, OIS, 12MP ultra-wide angle camera with f/2.2 aperture, 5MP depth sensor with f/2.4 aperture and a 32MP with f/2.2 aperture selfie camera.

The Galaxy A54 also has Pro video, single take, night mode, slow motion, hyperlapse and more modes. There is Live Focus mode for portrait and it allows users to adjust the bokeh effect before or after the shot. There is a selfie portrait option for the front camera that uses software to blur the background. There is also a wide-angle option for the front camera, similar to other Samsung phones.

The Software. The new Galaxy A54 is powered by Exynos 1380 octa-core processor with 8GB RAM and 128GB/256GB storage options. Its runs on Android 13-based One UI 5.1 OS out-of-the-box and supports up to four years of Android OS (up to Android 17) and five years of security software support (up to the year 2028).

The Battery. Galaxy A54 is equips with a 5,000mAh unit with 25W charging which has been claimed by Samsung to be able to use up to 20 hours of Internet usage or up to 21 hours of video playbacks, up to 46 hours of talk time or 19 hours of internet usage or 68 hours of audio playback time is one of the selling point for this Galaxy A54.

What’s In The Box: As sem as its predecessor, there were not much accessories that comes with the phone. The Galaxy A54 is equipped with a Quick Start Guide, Warranty Card, Regional Lock Guide, an Ejection Pin, and a Charging Cable.

Conclusion. Our first impressions of the display are largely positive; it’s big enough to comfortably watch YouTube videos and movies on Netflix, colours are vibrant and punchy (if not a little too vibrant) and it’s easily legible in direct sunlight with a maximum brightness of 1000nits.

Currently, the Galaxy A54 is priced at RM 1,899 with FREE Galaxy Buds Live. With 5 years security updates + 4 years OS updates + 2 years warranty(Valid: 23 Mar – 6 Apr 2023).
