Boat Adventure in the Dutch Venice [Travel Vlog 106] 荷兰威尼斯乘船冒险

Nestled in the Northeastern part of the Netherlands, Giethoorn Village is a picturesque haven that seems to have stepped out of a fairy tale. Approximately 85 minutes’ drive from Amsterdam, this charming village attracts around one million visitors annually, earning its place among the top 10 attractions in the Netherlands. Known affectionately as the Venice of the Netherlands, Giethoorn offers a unique blend of natural beauty, historical charm, and serene waterways, making it an unforgettable destination.

Discovering Giethoorn

Upon arriving in Giethoorn, I was immediately captivated by the tranquility and beauty of this car-free village. The commercial heart of Giethoorn is a maze of hand-dug canals, small islands, and 176 charming bridges, seamlessly connecting the entire area. This intricate network of waterways and bridges creates a delightful backdrop, reminiscent of Venice but with a distinct Dutch character.

Exploring by Boat

The best way to explore Giethoorn is by water. Options abound for renting whisper boats, boarding guided cruises, or taking private boat tours. Opting for a private boat tour, I was excited to immerse myself in the peaceful surroundings and picturesque scenery. As we boarded the boat, we were warmly welcomed with traditional Dutch cookies known as Stroopwafels. To my surprise, these cookies were incredibly delicious – two thin waffles held together with a luscious caramel syrup. I found myself reaching for more, savoring each bite of this quintessential Dutch treat.

Steering the Boat

One of the highlights of our visit was the opportunity to drive a private boat on the lake. With a gentle hum, our whisper boat glided smoothly over the clear waters. The experience of steering the boat was both exhilarating and calming. As I took the helm, I felt a unique sense of freedom and connection with the serene surroundings. The lake, bordered by lush greenery and dotted with charming houses, provided a perfect setting for this adventure. Navigating the boat through the tranquil waters, I was able to appreciate the beauty of Giethoorn from a new perspective.

Historical Charm

As we gently glided along the canals, I marveled at the historical farmhouses lining the water’s edge. Built in the 18th and 19th centuries, these charming homes, with their thatched roofs and meticulously kept gardens, add a timeless quality to the village. Each house seemed like a storybook illustration brought to life, creating an atmosphere that was both nostalgic and enchanting.

A Lasting Impression

After more than an hour on the water, our private boat trip came to an end. As we disembarked, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and contentment. Giethoorn’s serene beauty, combined with its rich history and charming waterways, creates an experience that lingers in your memory long after you leave.

Visiting Giethoorn was more than just a day trip; it was a journey into a tranquil world where time slows down, and nature and history blend seamlessly. It’s an experience I will cherish for life, and one I highly recommend to anyone visiting the Netherlands. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful escape, a historical adventure, or simply a taste of Dutch culture, Giethoorn Village offers all this and more in a setting that’s truly magical.
