KAO Malaysia Partners with Selangor Government and Takeda Malaysia to Fight Mosquito-Borne Diseases for World Dengue Day

KAO Malaysia has unveiled its innovative Bioré GUARD Mos Block Serum, utilizing cutting-edge anti-landing technology to prevent mosquitoes from feeding on the skin. This launch marks the global expansion of KAO’s GUARD OUR FUTURE initiative, dedicated to protecting future generations from mosquito-borne illnesses through advanced product technology.

First introduced in Thailand two years ago and recently launched in Singapore, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, the Bioré GUARD Mos Block Serum creates a protective barrier on the skin, deterring mosquitoes and reducing bites. In Malaysia, KAO is collaborating with the Selangor State Government and Takeda Malaysia to enhance community protection against diseases like dengue fever.

“With the rapid evolution of global challenges, it’s crucial to advance our ESG strategy, the Kirei Lifestyle Plan, to achieve a sustainable society while enhancing our business and minimizing risks,” said Masahide Nishida, President of Skin Care Business at KAO Corporation. He emphasized the importance of the initiative, especially with the upcoming World Dengue Day on June 15.

Balancing Business and Social Responsibility

Mosquitoes are the deadliest creatures globally, causing over one million deaths annually from mosquito-borne diseases, according to 2022 data from Statista. In Southeast Asia, dengue fever poses a significant threat, particularly to children. KAO’s GUARD OUR FUTURE project aligns with its ESG strategy, the Kirei Lifestyle Plan (KLP), which integrates ESG principles into business operations to address key social issues while fostering growth.

“Dengue fever has been a persistent issue in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. Climate change and urbanization have expanded mosquito habitats, increasing dengue cases annually,” said Nishimaki Akira, President of KAO Malaysia. “Our commitment through GUARD OUR FUTURE is to combat dengue and safeguard our communities.”

Bioré’s product lineup protects skin from various environmental stressors, based on the concept that skin connects individuals to society. Bioré products, including the new Mos Block Serum, aim to guard against UV rays, heat, and infectious diseases, reinforcing KAO’s vision of protecting future lives.

GUARD OUR FUTURE Initiative in Malaysia

In Malaysia, dengue cases surged in 2023, with 123,133 reported cases and a significant rise in dengue-related deaths. In the first quarter of 2024, 41,565 cases and 28 deaths were reported, indicating a continued upward trend.

To launch GUARD OUR FUTURE in Malaysia, KAO Malaysia will donate Bioré GUARD Mos Block Serum units equivalent to the number of dengue cases in Selangor in 2023, totaling over 61,080 units worth RM971,172. Distribution will begin in July 2024 and continue through June 2025.

“The Selangor State Government, through its Public Health Committee, will work with KAO Malaysia to educate the public about dengue prevention and share essential measures,” said YB Puan Jamaliah Binti Jamaluddin, Public Health and Environment EXCO, Selangor State Government.

Upcoming Activities

From now until December 2024, GUARD OUR FUTURE will engage the community through:
– Signing a Memorandum of Agreement with the Selangor State Government and a Memorandum of Understanding with Takeda Malaysia
– Conducting awareness talks and community engagement in 50 schools
– Organizing three community clean-up sessions in Selangor’s dengue hotspots
