Located in District 6, Bình Tây Market is one of the most well-known traditional markets in the Chợ Lớn area. It is a busy market where you can find all kinds of products, from dried foods and spices to clothing, household items, snacks and other everyday goods.
But what caught my attention wasn’t just what was being sold inside the market.
It was how organised the market felt.
A Traditional Market That Feels Surprisingly Organised
I have visited quite a number of traditional markets around Vietnam, and one thing I noticed about Bình Tây Market was that it felt less messy and chaotic compared with many other markets I have visited.
Of course, it is still a traditional market. The walkways can be narrow, stalls are packed closely together and there are plenty of products everywhere.
But somehow, it doesn’t feel overwhelmingly cluttered.
It gives the impression that the market was carefully planned, with different types of products allocated to different sections.
As you walk around, you can start to notice that similar products tend to be grouped together. Rather than feeling like every stall is selling a completely random collection of things, there seems to be some organisation behind the layout.

If you have already visited Bến Thành Market, Bình Tây Market offers a noticeably different experience.
Bến Thành is probably the market most tourists associate with Ho Chi Minh City, and it has become a major tourist attraction.
Bình Tây, on the other hand, gives you a stronger feeling of a working traditional market.
There are still visitors and tourists walking around, but the atmosphere feels more connected to everyday commerce.
You can see goods being displayed in large quantities, products being arranged for wholesale purposes and traders going about their business.
For travellers who enjoy seeing how a city actually functions beyond its major tourist attractions, this makes Bình Tây particularly interesting.
Exploring the Products
There is plenty to see inside the market.
Depending on which section you walk through, you may come across dried food, spices, Chinese-style ingredients, snacks, clothing, household products, bags, footwear and various other goods.
The sheer variety is part of the fun.
Even if you are not planning to buy anything, it is worth taking your time to walk through the different sections and observe how the products are arranged.
For me, this was actually one of the highlights of visiting the market.
Rather than simply walking through a crowded market filled with random stalls, I felt like I was exploring different “departments” within one large traditional marketplace.
A Glimpse Into Chợ Lớn’s Vietnamese-Chinese Heritage
Bình Tây Market is also interesting because of its connection to Chợ Lớn, an area strongly associated with Ho Chi Minh City’s Chinese-Vietnamese heritage.
The architecture and atmosphere give the market a character that feels different from many other markets in the city.
Even if you are mainly interested in food or shopping, it is worth taking a moment to appreciate the surroundings.
The market isn’t just somewhere to buy things. It is also part of the history and commercial culture of Chợ Lớn.
Is Bình Tây Market Worth Visiting?
For me, yes.
What I enjoyed most wasn’t necessarily finding a particular product or getting a bargain.
It was simply walking around and experiencing the market.
Compared with some of the other traditional markets I have visited in Vietnam, Bình Tây felt better organised and less messy.
The walkways are narrow, but the high ceilings prevent the space from feeling too enclosed. The apparent organisation of the different product sections also makes it easier to explore.
If you are already visiting Chợ Lớn, I would definitely include Bình Tây Market in your itinerary.
It may not have the same tourist fame as Bến Thành Market, but that’s precisely what makes it interesting.
It gives you a chance to see another side of Ho Chi Minh City — one that feels more traditional, commercial and connected to the everyday life of the city.
And sometimes, these are the places that make travelling more interesting.
Final Thoughts
Bình Tây Market isn’t necessarily a place where you need to spend hours shopping.
Instead, I would recommend coming here with curiosity.
Walk through the different sections, look at how the products are organised, take in the architecture and observe the people going about their daily business.
For me, the biggest surprise was how comfortable the market felt despite its narrow walkways.
The combination of planned sections, relatively organised stalls and a high ceiling gives Bình Tây Market a surprisingly pleasant atmosphere.
If you’re exploring Chợ Lớn and want to experience something beyond the usual tourist attractions, Bình Tây Market is definitely worth a visit.
