Flying to Vietnam has always been on my list, and this time around, I decided to try something different — VietJet Air. Known for its ultra low-cost fares across Southeast Asia, VietJet often pops up when you’re searching for budget-friendly flights. Naturally, the attractive pricing played a big part in my decision. Compared to other airlines, especially for short-haul routes to Vietnam, VietJet offered one of the most competitive fares, making it a practical choice for a quick getaway.
Boarding & First Look Inside the Aircraft
Once I stepped into the aircraft, my first impression was pretty straightforward — it felt very similar to AirAsia. The cabin design, colour scheme, and overall layout gave off that familiar low-cost carrier vibe. Nothing too fancy, but clean and functional.
The overhead compartments were just about the right size for small cabin luggage. If you’re carrying a compact backpack or a small carry-on, you should have no issue fitting it in. However, if your bag is slightly bulkier, you might need to adjust a little.
Seat & Space Experience
The seats immediately reminded me of AirAsia — slim, straightforward, and designed for short-haul efficiency. In front of the seat, there’s a foldable tray table along with a pocket that holds safety instruction cards and an onboard magazine.
The tray table itself is quite compact — just enough space for a simple meal and a drink. Don’t expect to comfortably place a laptop or anything too large, but for a quick bite mid-flight, it does the job.
Legroom, however, was on the tighter side. It felt slightly cramped, especially if you have a bag under the seat. There’s barely enough room to stretch, and fitting even a small bag underneath can make it feel even more restricted. For shorter flights, it’s manageable, but taller passengers might feel a bit uncomfortable.
In-Flight Comfort & Cleanliness
The flight I was on was almost fully packed, which is pretty common for budget airlines. Despite that, the overall comfort level was average — not uncomfortable, but definitely not spacious either. It’s one of those “you get what you pay for” situations.
I did check out the lavatory during the flight. As expected, it was small, but I was pleasantly surprised that it was clean and well-stocked with tissues. For a budget airline, that’s definitely a plus point.
Landing Experience
One thing that stood out — and not in the best way — was the landing. The aircraft felt a bit wobbly as we descended, and the touchdown itself was noticeably hard. It wasn’t dangerous or alarming, but compared to my experiences with AirAsia, it didn’t feel as smooth. It gave me the impression that the landing wasn’t as refined as what I’m used to.
Final Thoughts
Overall, flying with VietJet was a pretty standard budget airline experience. You’re getting affordability and basic functionality — nothing more, nothing less. If your priority is saving money and you’re okay with tighter space and average comfort, VietJet is a solid option for short trips to Vietnam.
Would I fly with VietJet again? Probably yes — especially if the price is right. But if comfort is a top priority, you might want to weigh your options.
