For those curious about Amsterdam’s more risqué attractions, the Sex Museum is a popular spot. Located on Damrak, it’s a museum dedicated to the history of sex and eroticism. Unfortunately, the long queues can be a deterrent, and during our visit, we opted to skip the wait. Nonetheless, it’s worth noting for future trips.
De Bijenkorf
Next, head to **De Bijenkorf**, a chain of high-end department stores in the Netherlands. The flagship store on Dam Square is a must-visit for luxury shopping enthusiasts. Owned by the Selfridges Group, De Bijenkorf offers a premium shopping experience akin to that of Selfridges in Britain and Brown Thomas in Ireland. Whether you’re shopping for designer clothes, cosmetics, or gourmet food, this store has it all.
Madame Tussauds Amsterdam and Royal Palace Amsterdam
Located in the bustling Dam Square, Madame Tussauds Amsterdam is another highlight. This famous wax museum features lifelike figures of celebrities, historical figures, and cultural icons. Right next to it is the **Royal Palace Amsterdam**, an impressive 17th-century building originally built as a city hall but now serving as the King’s official reception palace. Be sure to take some photos here; the architecture and grandeur are truly breathtaking.
Dam Square
Dam Square itself is a vibrant hub of activity and one of the most important locations in Amsterdam. Surrounded by notable buildings and frequently hosting events, it’s a lively spot where you can soak in the atmosphere of the city.
Magna Plaza
Just behind the Royal Palace, you’ll find Magna Plaza, an indoor shopping centre housed in a historical building that was once the main post office. Built in the late 19th century, its neo-Gothic architecture is worth a visit alone. Inside, you’ll discover over 20 stores, including brands like Mango, Swarovski, and Lacoste, plus a new exhibition space spread over four floors. When you need a break, grab a coffee or a sandwich at its famous cafe; Grand Café Ovidius.
Anne Frank House
No trip to Amsterdam is complete without acknowledging its poignant history at the Anne Frank House. Located on the Prinsengracht canal, this museum is the actual house where Anne Frank and her family hid from the Nazis during World War II. Due to high demand, tickets often sell out quickly. Although we were unable to get tickets, we still enjoyed the surrounding area and took photos at Anne Frank’s doorstep. The hidden pathway Anne Frank used remains a significant yet elusive part of history that we hope to explore on our next visit.
Amsterdam Red Light District
From history, transition to the modern and controversial Amsterdam Red Light District. Known for its vibrant nightlife and unique cultural scene, this area is a fascinating mix of bars, nightclubs, and adult entertainment venues.
The House of Rituals
We stopped by to The House of Rituals as the place looks interesting. Its a brand-new holistic shopping and lifestyle concept in the town. Shoppers would be able to discover a range of exclusive and unique collections and navigate a journey of personal well-being. I manage to try out its life prediction machine on top floor of the shopping.
The Nine Streets
Finally, explore The Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes), a charming neighborhood just behind the Royal Palace. Described by The New York Times as ‘a charming mixture of designer boutiques, art galleries, vintage clothing stores, gift shops and places to eat and drink’, this area is perfect for leisurely strolls. It’s a shopper’s paradise with cozy cafes where you can unwind after a day of exploring.
